Two of the current top bag trends, according to Look magazine of 26th May,2008, are canvas shoppers and ultra violet purses. Add to this our current passion for vintage clutches, and practical bags such as satchels and messengers, and you have all the styles you need to be fashion-forward this season.
Purple Purse Trend
Plenty of A-list celebrities have been seen perching a purple or plum-colored purse on their arm. Purple continues to be a strong color next season, so you really can’t go wrong. There's Valentino's oversized Pintucked Shopper ($1,180) proudly carried by Nicky Hilton, or Miu Miu’s large ruched plum frame bag ($1595) sported by Denise Van Outen, perfect for carrying all those summer goodies on your way to the pool or beach. Canvas Totes
No summer would be complete without a canvas shopper or beach bag. The reusable environmentally friendly tote bag is right on-trend. From trendsetter Anya Hindmarsh to other big brands who have jumped on the green bandwagon, conscience shopping with an eco-friendly, reusable canvas tote is great way to go green. Check out Scoop NYC’s "Green and Gorgeous" lightweight linen and cotton tote at only $28.
At higher-end designer, there's Juicy Couture’s slogan emblazoned California canvas shopper (£84) or grand dame Vivienne Westwood’s red label signature print tote (£295). In keeping with the fashion industry's desire for everything luxe this season, then Fendi has a to-die-for metallic gold and canvas tote (£375), with waxed monochrome lining. Summer Satchels
Satchel shapes of all sizes are an edgy look for summer and are as practical as they are trendy. From Miu Miu’s Vitello Luxe to Anya Hindmarsh's Bess, satchel-style shoulder bag (£695), vintage tans in camel and oaks are the look of the season, according to Look. Chloé has a oaky based Alis oversized satchel which provides a welcome change from the standard tan coloring. For celebrity chic, try Charlotte's (from Sex and the City) red Valentino satchel; the new SATC movie is going down a storm, and is handbag designer’s dream ticket, given all the free promotion! Red, by the way, is another much touted IT color for the fall season.
Staying with the Sex and the City theme, Asos.com has an affordable across body, ring satchel, a snip at £15, in the style of Sarah Jessica Parker.
Vintage-Look Clutch Purses
The fashion world is currently clamoring for everything vintage, and clutch purses are no exception. Rifle through your local vintage store for a bargain, or choose from a large number of great beaded and embellished ‘70s styles from high-street chains such as Accessorize. Get a retro look with woven straws, heavily worked stitching, beading and embroidery, and a touch of metallic glitz. Hard-clutches have also made a come back, and Stella McCartney has a unique engraved wooden clutch (£525 Net-a-Porter) as part of her spring/summer collection. For something special, take a look at the handmade, vintage-inspired, elegant Ophelia clutch from Rachael Hannah Bags. At £95 these British designed purses (handmade in London) are a real find, and range from '50s inspired vintage chic to '80s cocktail party purses.
