Whilst there is no one celebrity It-bag that has so far evolved this season, top-handled totes, across-body bags and structured satchels, and chain link straps are a main feature of fall. Purple and pinkish berry hues spice-up the accessories palette, along with the new neutrals of soft gray, oyster, buff and coffee-colors.
Emerging trends of Romantic Punk (a combination of heavyweight black lace and punk-like styling), Chanel-style gold chain straps, (faux) exotic skins and plenty of fringing and pleat detailing can be found on this fall and winter's hottest bags.

Top-Handled Bags
Long handles, round handles, large handles adorn frame bags, slouchy bags and totes. Oscar de la Renta has a to-die for oversized top-handled tote, whilst Miu Miu’s metallic purple Matelasse represents everything good about this season, with lavish gathered pleating, chunky silvertone lock closure and thick ruched handles
Romantic Punk
Miucca Prada’s fall collection is largely responsible for the latest craze in heavyweight lace. The look has been toughened up with studs and chunky detailing to provide a contrast between demure and sexy. Prada’s Pizzo S Lace Satchel (Saks $1995) with vintage style thick black lace and modern ruching detail, is one such example. A number of copy-cat versions have now hit stores and are selling fast.
Passion for Purple and Pink
This season’s berry shades of purples, plums, lavenders and strawberry pinks are oh-so-feminine this fall, giving a hint of richness and sophistication. If you are looking for one new color to add to your wardrobe this fall then make it magenta, says Bagtrends.com, in their featured “Top Three Trends.”
Plenty of Pleats
There are pleats a plenty in purses and bags this fall. From cute clutches to top-handled totes, including Gucci’s purple Hysteria bag,(Saks, $1650). The soft folds of this purse and its small and slouchy-yet-sophisticated styling will take you from day-to-evening in a blink. For a new twist on the pleating trend check out Christian Louboutin’s amazing Layered Leather Hobo (Saks,$1995) with armadillo-inspired silhouette—a real show-stopper.
Exotic Skins
Whether it’s faux or the real thing, classically-shaped crocodile, alligator or python bags are this season’s byword for luxury. Splurge on an exotic skin bag and this look never goes out of fashion. If you want to be right on trend then take a look at Dior’s purple printed 61 patent croc tote (Saks, $1850).
Chain Link Straps
According to Net-A-Porter, “a bag slung across the body is one of the hottest trends.” Add to that some decadent gold chain straps, which reflect the current layered chain look in accessories and you have this season’s modern look in over-body bags. The Chloé 3 chain satchel (Net-A-Porter, £790) and triple chain messenger bag sit neatly across the body, subtly creating that Parisian feel. No mention of chain-straps would be complete without Chanel’s iconic 2.55 bag, which gets a makeover every season.
