There is something decidedly fishy about Lulu Guinness's new Spring 2009 collection. It features starfish prints, oysters, shells, seafood restaurants and kissing fish.

The world is your oyster when it comes to lovely Lulu Guinness bags, not least because of this iconic British designer's Spring 2009 seaside theme.

Lulu Guinness bags and purses are loved the world over, endorsed by A-list celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Madonna, and model-of-the-moment, Agnes Deyn. Whether it is the designer's instantly recognisable snakeskin lips-shaped clutch, her top-handled Jenny bag or the Edith tote, these Lulu Guinness staple styles get a spring and summer makeover.

Who Carries a Lulu Guinness Bag?

Women who carry a Lulu Guinness bag show that they are not following the crowd but have some individuality. These bags are made to be noticed and are highly collectable. Lulu Guinness bags are known for their originality and quirky styling. Lauren Lavern, British radio DJ, television presenter and former singer is quoted on the designer's website as saying "a Lulu Guinness bag is all about style rather than fashion and real wit rather than gimmicks."

Whilst it is difficult not to smile at Lulu Guinness's witty slogans and quirky lip-shaped bags, there is a serious side to her purses in terms of attention to detail and proportion.

Whilst the Resort 2008 collection played on poodles and poodle parlors, the spring range, with its fishy theme embraces the best of this season’s trends with classic monochromes and eye-popping brights. This includes one of the key colors for spring; a tangerine-like hue which looks good enough to eat, which Lulu calls Sunblush, the color of warm summer days.

The underlying theme this season is the seaside. There are 1950s inspired shell and starfish prints, purses with scalloped edging, kissing fish and an underwater scene with the witty slogan “Be careful what you fish for”. Lulu Guinness’s Jenny and Anna bags with their seafood restaurant print may evoke comforting childhood memories of summer days by the sea. Wittily entitled "Lulu’s Lobster Pot", the restaurant print captures the essence of the British seaside holiday, advertising its “Catch of the Day” and today’s “Fresh Fish”.

For those who prefer classic rather than quirky, there is the stylish large Edith Quilted Lips tote, or the Pollyanna Crinkle Patent bag which Elle UK’s online SS2009 Accessories Report hails as a “must-have of the season.” Stylish and smart are the ‘50s Scallop Print Pleated Tote and large Carmella bag (a personal favorite of the designer), these monochrome retro-style prints are versatile and chic enough to go from season to season.

Says Jennie Hunt, of Handbags and Gladrags, the very first online retailer to stock Lulu Guinness handbags, "The 50's style retro print is in classic neutral colours which means they really are take-me-anywhere bags. The soft structures add elegance but without formality."

Lulu Guinness Designs

The Lulu Guinness Spring 2009 range represents everything that is good about summer days by the sea, with its quirky seaside designs and bold, bright colors. The collection provides a ray of sunshine in the current doom and gloom of the world economic crisis and this British handbag designer's sense of humor is likely to raise a smile.
